Creative Food #5 – Heston Blumenthal
Posted: May 22, 2013 Filed under: Creative Food | Tags: creative food, heston blumenthal, heston's feasts, the fat duck Leave a comment »I couldn’t possibly go too much further in the creative food series without a post on my foodie hero Heston Blumenthal. Heston went to my secondary school but I’m doubtful that has much to do with his success…
A self-taught chef, Heston Blumenthal’s route to the top has been an unconventional one, involving rule-breaking, unusual experiments and an exploding oven. On the Fat Duck (his famous restaurant) website, Heston says I want to create food that is delicious, but this depends on so much more than simply what’s going on in the mouth-context, history, nostalgia, emotion, memory and the interplay of sight, smell, sound and taste all play an important part in our appreciation and enjoyment of food.
The awards page on the website is vast and in July 2006 Heston Blumenthal was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science by The University of Reading for his dedicated research and commitment to the exploration of culinary science. The Fat Duck opened in 1995 and was awarded its third Michelin star in January 2004.
What really got me excited about Heston was his series on Channel 4 called ‘Heston’s Feasts‘ where he hosted themed meals and created crazy food such as lickable wallpaper, meat fruit and an ejaculating cake. I just love the theatrical nature of the whole thing…
- Snail Porridge
- ooo, dramatic
- Edible Garden
- Absynth Jelly
- Fishy
- Posh Nosh
- Fishy
- Savoury Lollies
- Ejaculating Pudding

Creative Food #3 – Dominic Davies
Posted: May 18, 2013 Filed under: Creative Food | Tags: creative food, cultivated couture, dominic davies, food photography, heston blumenthal, innovative food, the fat duck Leave a comment »Dominic Davies is an award winning food photographer who won a James Beard award for his photographic work on the Big Fat Duck Cookbook by Heston Blumenthal.
Dominic has also done some fascinating work deconstructing cocktails for Grey Goose Vodka .
He has also worked with Andrew Stellitano (who I posted about in Creative Food #1) on a project for ‘Design Times’ a South African design magazine. This image shows their deconstructed English Breakfast…
Dominic also appears to have a love of snails (but he does photograph them beautifully)…
Creative Food #2 – Cultivated Couture (Emily Crane)
Posted: May 16, 2013 Filed under: Creative Food | Tags: creative food, cultivated couture, emily crane, food clothes, food clothing, innovative food Leave a comment »Emily Crane designs edible couture and has won international acclaim with her unique style of tailoring gastronomy, known as ‘Micro-Nutrient Couture’. Recently graduated from Kingston University’s newly established MA in Fashion her focus was fashion innovation and Crane graduated in 2010 with Distinction.
Emily has since joined the Nancy Tilbury Studio where she works as part of a transdisciplinary team to strategize, innovate and create fashioned technologies and focus on the the hybridization of design science and couture.
There’s a great video on Emily’s website with examples of her work.
The Cultivated Couture website states that Emily is A new breed of designer who is pushing the boundaries of design through materials and process; growing, cultivating and forming new hybrid materials for fashion futures. Borrowing skills from molecular cooking, she is envisioning a future where fast fashion has to respond to a more sustainable future. Cool Huh.
Creative Food #1 – A* (Andrew Stellitano)
Posted: May 14, 2013 Filed under: Creative Food | Tags: A*, Andrew Stelliano, creative food, innovative food Leave a comment »A* combines concept driven design with cutting edge culinary techniques. The company offers a truly bespoke catering service, unique products and engaging design. Andrew Stellitano is the brain behind the project, he is a multidisciplinary designer who’s work explores the connective association of our senses and the visual communication of sensory subjects.
Recent clients include:
Absolut, Aston Martin, Audi, AnOther Magazine, Marks & Spencer, Nestle, Royal National Institute for the Blind, Tate & Lyle, Soho House Group, The Future Laboratory, The School of Life, and The Victoria & Albert Museum.
You can check out his work HERE and I’d suggest spending a while exploring the diverse projects he has been involved in. One of my favourites is the Haribo Starmix project where he appears to have melted down the sweets to create awesome pictures of space!
Another great piece of work is ‘sweet shoppe‘ where Guests journeyed to the historic heart of Spitalfields to experience the future of retail at Sweet Shoppe. Behind a magic door they found a hyper-real, personalised, technology-enabled installation that let them see, smell, touch and taste the future. Magical and fantastical, each journey through Sweet Shoppe was designed to be memorable and personal. Singly, or in groups of two, guests met our Shoppe-keeper and were taken on a tour that combined the mega-choice of the internet with the curated, customised selection of the concierge. Through our tech-enabled approach to personalisation, we uncovered the best sweet for each guest, and in so doing, revealed how the world of retail is changing to become highly niche, bespoke, social and a one-on-one relationship — from high street to high-end
Finally, check out the photos of Andrew’s work with Tate and Lyle on a series of Pancake recipes!
NEW SERIES – ‘creative food’
Posted: May 13, 2013 Filed under: Creative Food | Tags: neonmob, food, creative food, heston blumenthal, heston's feasts, food series, 43 things, stumble upon 2 Comments »Hi everyone…
Sorry I’ve not been posting lately, been doing a bit of tidying up of other social media accounts and procrastinating on stumble upon, 43 things and getting to grips with Neonmob – which you should ALL check out!
Anywho – this is just to let you know that over the next few weeks there will be a bunch of posts going up on the subject of ‘creative food’… each post will explore a company or event that I think is doing something innovative with food or drink.
I’ve been inspired by a number of things lately; cake in a mug, adding some food related things to my 43 things list and going on a ‘no bad food for two weeks’ regime to name but a few. I’ve also watch a couple of episodes of Heston’s Feasts again, he really is mental but you’ve gotta love the theatre of it all.
So – get ready for incredible food related excitement over the next few weeks!
The 101 Project 003/101 – Childhood TV
Posted: May 12, 2013 Filed under: The 101 Project | Tags: childhood tv, pinterest, the 101 project Leave a comment »So, the third board of 101 pins is complete over at The 101 Project!
Who doesn’t enjoy reminiscing about the tv they watched as a child right? And perhaps like me, you have started to build a collection of those classic 70s and 80s shows now that they are being released on DVD?
There isn’t quite 101 different programmes represented on this board but it’s pretty close. I have thoroughly enjoyed remembering what I used to watch when I got in from school or on lazy Saturday mornings or what shows we used to watch as a family in front of the fire on a Sunday evening.
Obviously cartoons play a huge part on this board but it doesn’t include anything that has it’s own board elsewhere in the project so don’t be put out by the lack of Thundercats or Dr Who, their time will come…
if you spot a duplicate pin – do let me know!
Awesome new idea…
Posted: April 23, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: digital art, digital collectors cards, digital illustration, neonmob Leave a comment »Neonmob is an awesome new website (still in BETA) that allows you to collect and trade digital collectors cards. I could never afford collectors cards as a kid as as i’m not into moshi monsters there isn’t much to collect now that i can afford it. As you can tell from my posts here i do love digital art so neonmob looks like it’ll be great.
If you want to join me and do some trading once it’s up and running then use this link…
